I think period novels are always tricky with students because the historical gap between the novel and the present sometimes serves as a barrier for allowing students to connect with the novel. While I think Pamela Porter's characters make this book accessible to almost all students, there are several references to historical events that the students may be unfamiliar with. I think these can easily become teachable moments that could perhaps become mini-lesson while reading Crazy Man.
