Teaching Experience
Professional Semester Two |
Monseignor McCoy High School
10-1 English Location: Medicine Hat Teacher Associate: Cheryl Albers University Consultant: Arlene Purcell In McCoy High School I found an extremely welcoming environment. This High School was a participant of the High School Redesign project in Alberta, and was in the midst of updating their physical space as well as their teaching practice. It was the perfect opportunity for my to implement the progressive learning strategies I had learned at the university in a real classroom setting. During my six weeks I taught two grade ten classes an intensive media unit. We examined elements of advertising, photography, video, and journalism in a variety of contexts. For their final project students created their own piece of media to promote a social issue of their choosing. I was very impressed with the wonderful insight these students brought to the classroom. During this practicum I also became closely acquainted with the English program of studies and planning strategies to use in the High School setting. By far the greatest challenge was adapting to a older age group. I worked hard to improve my classroom management and build relationships with the students. |

Professional Semester One
Rock Lake Colony School
Grade 4-9 Subjects: Math, Science, Art, P.E. University Consultant: Brian Walker Teacher Associate: Tracey Nadeau Being placed on a colony was a unique and rewarding experience. The students were endlessly curious, and they often challenged me with their many questions about subject material, and the world in which I lived. In the process of finding answers with them, I learned just as much, if not more, than the students did. Most importantly, I learned that kids are kids, no matter their dress or lifestyle. Rock Lake also gave me the unique opportunity to work with a variety of special needs, including blindness and hearing impairments. With the help of the education assistants, I learned many useful techniques to differentiate for these students. Though an isolated teaching setting, I was an amazing cultural experience. |

Education 2500St Patrick Elementary School
Grade 1 I had the pleasure of working with a grade one class for my first practicum. I often worked one on one with students tutoring them in basic math and reading skills. Additionally, I had the pleasure of attending two field trips to Home Hardware and to view a production of Aladdin the Musical. Overall, I found myself inspired by their level of enthusiasm and joy. |
